LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS DISCUSSED THE SITUATION IN GEORGIA WITH THE EU FOREIGN POLICY CHIEF
On 9 August, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas, who is on a visit in Georgia, discussed on the telephone the situation in Georgia with the European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
Minister P.Vaitiekūnas informed the EU foreign policy chief about the current situation and stressed that the conflict in Georgia has expanded – military actions take place not only in South Ossetia but also in other regions of Georgia, infrastructure as well as civilian objects are being targeted.
It was stated during the conversation that Georgia needs more active involvement of EU and other international structures.
“I think that EU has to form and send to South Ossetia an independent and neutral peacekeeping mission”, – said Lithuanian Foreign Minister P.Vaitiekūnas.
On 11 August Minister P.Vaitiekūnas will present a report on situation in Georgia at the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Paris.
Lithuania will present the report next week in Brussels, where a meeting of EU Political and Security Committee is going to take place on Lithuania’s initiative. Lithuanian Foreign Minister is also planning to present this report in the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council.
On 9 August, current situation in Georgia was also discussed during the Minister’s meeting with the President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili in Tbilisi. Minister P.Vaitiekūnas and President M.Saakashvili talked about a possible help of Lithuania and EU.
Minister P.Vaitiekūnas together with the President of Georgia visited the Republican Tbilisi Hospital, where wounded civilians undergo medical treatment.
