LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS DISCUSSED THE EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICY WITH THE EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER

On 8 March in Brussels Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas met with the European Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, who is responsible for external relations, as well as the European Neighbourhood Policy and thanked her for clear European Commission’s support for tackling the problem of discontinued oil supply to Lithuania via the oil pipeline “Druzhba”.

While discussing the possibility to facilitate visa regime for Russia’s Kaliningrad Region residents, B.Ferrero-Waldner supported Lithuania’s initiative and promised to address this issue during the meeting of the EU Council together with Germany currently presiding over the EU.

Minister P.Vaitekūnas also thanked the European Commission for helping to establish the European Humanities University in exile in Vilnius. The Minister asked to continue supporting the university in the future. B.Ferrero-Waldner guaranteed that the Commission was to remain a donor. However, she remarked that grants should be awarded not only by the European Commission, but as much support as possible should be mobilized form the international community.

The Member of the European Commission welcomed the proposal by P.Vaitiekūnas to liberalize the EU visa regime and trade relations with Georgia and Moldova.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas in the delegation headed by the Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas is taking part in the Spring European Council in Brussels.
