LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE ON A WORKING VISIT TO THE USA

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas and Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas are paying a working visit to Washington.

During the meetings with US officials from the Department of State and Pentagon the ministers are discussing fight against international terrorism, actions to stabilize the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan and other important issues of international security.

On 7 August the meetings are scheduled with Deputy Secretary of State of the United States John Negroponte and Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried. On 8 August the ministers will visit Pentagon, and will discuss issues of international security with Deputy Secretary of Defence Gordon England.

During their visit to the USA ministers P.Vaitiekūnas and J.Olekas will also meet with representatives of non-governmental organizations.

Lithuania and the USA are bound by strategic partnership.
Lithuania actively participates in operations and missions of NATO and coalition forces in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo. In July this year, Lithuania strengthened its participation in the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation by sending troops of special forces to southern Afghanistan. In total there are 233 Lithuanian soldiers deployed at international operations and missions.
