Lithuanian-Israeli political consultations in Vilnius
Annual political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Israel were held in Vilnius on 19 June 2017 where the most significant matters of bilateral cooperation and international affairs were discussed.
The Lithuanian delegation was headed by Eduardas Borisovas, Director of the Latin America, Africa, Asia and Pacific Department, and Rodica Radian-Gordon, Deputy Director General for European Affairs was the head of the Israeli delegation.
During the political consultations, the Lithuanian and Israeli representatives underlined excellent bilateral relations between the countries, mutually beneficial cooperation in international organisations, strengthening of economic ties with growing exports to Israel in 2016. Active relations in defence, internal affairs, culture, science and other areas have opened prospects for deepening of the relations and for setting up an Intergovernmental Commission.
Members of the delegations exchanged views on pressing international issues, discussed the Middle East Peace Process, situation in the Middle East and North Africa region and in the EU Eastern Partnership countries, and the key items on the European Union agenda.
In 2017 Lithuania and Israel are celebrating the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations by issuing the Joint Statement by the Presidents, launching a postage stamp dedicated to the anniversary and a commemorative medal to mark friendship between the two nations and holding a variety of cultural events. A visit to Lithuania by Speaker of the Knesset, Yuli Edelstein, is planned for September 2017.
The head of the Israeli delegation also met with Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Neris Germanas, and Chief Adviser to the President on Foreign Policy, Nerijus Aleksiejūnas.
