LITHUANIAN-GERMAN RELATIONS AND THE EU’S AGENDA WERE DISCUSSED IN BERLIN

On 27 November in Berlin, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė met with State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany Wolf-Ruthart Born who is in charge of bilateral relations with Lithuania and the European Union affairs and with Head of the European Directorate-General of the Federal Foreign Office Peter Tempel.  Bilateral relations between Lithuania and Germany were on the agenda of these meetings.

The Vice-Minister expressed trust that the new German Government will continue to dedicate a lot of attention to the relations with Lithuania. She also encouraged to expand bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and to promote mutual investments. A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė conveyed an invitation of Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas to Federal Foreign Minister of Germany Guido Westerwelle to visit Lithuania in the nearest future.

The Vice-Minister and the German officials discussed cooperation in the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) and the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. During the meetings, Lithuania’s preparation for the Presidency of the EU in 2013 was discussed, and the German officials were asked to share their experience of the EU Presidency. Germany held the EU Presidency in the first half of 2007.

A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and W.R.Born discussed important issues on the EU agenda: the review of the EU budget, the Stockholm programme on the EU priorities in the areas of freedom, security and justice for the next five years, the climate change, the EU enlargement process and relations with the closest EU neighbours and Russia.

Representatives from Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry and Germany’s Federal Foreign Office also discussed the infrastructure and energy projects.
