LITHUANIAN-FRENCH MFA POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS TAKE PLACE IN PARIS

In Paris, political consultations were held by the Lithuanian and French Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MFA) with a view to the oncoming NATO Summit in Istanbul in June 2004. The topical issues discussed were the situation in Iraq and Kosovo, the Alliance’s relations with Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Russia and the Caucasus Region. On 19 April, the Lithuanian delegation led by MFA Undersecretary Evaldas Ignatavičius, discussed those issues with Director of Department of Strategic Affairs, Security and Disarmament of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs Philippe Carré as well as other high-ranking officials of the Ministry. The diplomats also exchanged opinions on the development of European capabilities and European policy of security and defence. According to Philippe Carré, Lithuanian-French bilateral contacts after an enlargement of the European Union (EU) should become even more intense. The French diplomat commended Lithuania‘s active participation in normalising the situation in the Balkans and involvement in other political processes.
