LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER THANKS TURKEY FOR ITS NON-RECOGNITION OF LITHUANIA’S ANNEXATION

On 18 October during the event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations of Lithuania and Turkey at Vilnius City Hall, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas highlighted close ties between the two countries and thanked Turkey for its non-recognition of Lithuania’s annexation.

“We shall always remember with gratitude and respect the fact that Turkey has never recognized the Soviet annexation of Lithuania. We are grateful to Turkey that, after Lithuania had regained its independence, this country initiated the re-establishment of diplomatic relations, which meant that Turkey not only recognized Lithuania, but also gave strong moral support to the country in that difficult time,” said the Vice-Minister.

According to the Vice-Minister, Lithuania and Turkey have constructed relations throughout the past more than 400 years of their history, and today the political, economic and cultural ties are closer than ever.

The Vice-minister said that Turkey had always strongly supported Lithuania’s integration into NATO, and Lithuania supported Turkey on its path towards the European Union.

Lithuania and Turkey re-established diplomatic relations on 3 September 1991.
