LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER SAYS THE DECISION TO CLOSE THE INTERNATIONAL CIVILIAN OFFICE WILL MAKE THE AUTHORITIES IN KOSOVO MORE INDEPENDENT
At the last meeting of the International Steering Group for Kosovo (ISG) on 10 September in Pristina, the capital city of Kosovo, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Egidijus Meilūnas said that decisions taken by the Group to end the supervised independence of Kosovo and to end the mandate of the International Civilian Representative would allow Kosovo to become really independent.
“It is necessary to understand that the closure of the International Civilian Office does not mean that all the problematic issues related to strengthening Kosovo’s statehood have already been solved. It is important to maintain the international community’s attention and involvement in the process of consolidation of this young democracy,” Meilūnas noted at the meeting.
During bilateral talks with leaders of Kosovo, Meilūnas assured that Lithuania was determined to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, while experts from Lithuanian institutions were prepared to share their experience of implementation of reforms, as well as the experience of European integration through the implementation of joint EU Twinning and other technical assistance projects.
During the event, members of the International Steering Group for Kosovo met with Atifete Jahjaga, the President of Kosovo, and participated in the solemn session of the Assembly of Kosovo on the occasion of ending the supervised independence.
