Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister meets with members of the Committee on Defence of the Swedish Parliament’s delegation

On 6 June, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius met with members of the Committee on Defence of the delegation of the Swedish Parliament (the Riksdag) and discussed security challenges facing the region.

Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister stressed that cooperation with Sweden and other Nordic and Baltic countries was among the key priorities of Lithuania’s foreign policy.

“We are facing very similar threats, so we have to continue to strengthen our cooperation to ensure security in the region and Sweden is our very important partner. We are also interested in Sweden’s close relationship with NATO,” said Skusevičius.

The participants of the meeting shared information about the two countries’ efforts to enhance defence capabilities and to build resilience readiness against hybrid threats.

Together with the Swedish Government, the Committee on Defence of the Swedish Parliament considers matters concerning the shaping of security and defence policy. The Committee will draft the first report this year on a follow-up for the development of the country’s total national defence with special emphasis on civil resistance. Another report on military aspects is to be submitted to the Swedish Government in 2019.

The Committee on Defence consists of 12 Members of the Swedish Parliament. Representatives from ministries, civil preparedness agencies and the armed forces are also involved in the Committee’s activities. The delegation is led by the Chair of the Committee on Defence, Member of the Swedish Parliament, Björn von Sydow.
