LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER: ENERGY SECURITY IS AMONG EU FOREIGN POLICY PRIORITIES

At a Conference “European Energy Security” in Croatia on 3 October, the Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Rolandas Kriščiūnas stressed that energy security was among EU foreign policy priorities. “Energy security is a major goal of the EU’s common foreign policy and the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council pays special attention to it,” R.Kriščiūnas said at the conference in Dubrovnik.

According to him, priorities for the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council in this field include the completion of the EU internal energy market and strengthening of the external dimension of the common EU energy policy.

“Reliable energy supply at a fair price and creation of an effective internal European energy market are important for entire EU, aiming to boost competitiveness, job creation and economic growth. Real implementation of the Third Energy Package and a single EU position during negotiations with energy suppliers are among the most effective measures for the achievement of these objectives,” the Vice-Minister said.

He also drew senior EU officials’ attention to issues related to nuclear safety in the EU’s neighbourhood and added that ensuring fair and equal competitive conditions for energy suppliers to the European Union and third countries should become an integral part of the EU’s external energy policy.

The Conference “European Energy Security” is one of the first high-level events in Croatia. The country joined the EU on 1 July and became the 28th Member State of the EU.
