LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER CALLS ON EU CIVILIAN OPERATIONS COMMANDER TO TIGHTEN SECURITY FOR EULEX KOSOVO

On 1 October, the Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrius Krivas sent a letter to Hansjörg Haber, EU Civilian Operations Commander, emphasizing the need to tighten security measures for staff of the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) and reiterating Lithuania’s commitment to continue to actively participate in the stabilization of the situation in Kosovo.

The Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister thanked H.Haber for his solidarity with Lithuania and for condolences over the death of EULEX staff member, Lithuanian customs officer Audrius Šenavičius on 19 September. The Vice-Minister expressed belief that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

In his letter to the EU senior official, A.Krivas draws attention to the need of and concerns about EULEX staff security. Lithuania welcomes tightened personal security measures for EULEX staff after the tragic incident, such as flak jackets and armoured vehicles, and offers to make them permanent to EULEX staff.

A.Krivas also suggested that when coordinating actions with other international missions in Kosovo the EULEX leadership should consider additional measures to ensure greater personal safety and security for civilian staff in various missions, including election observation.

A.Krivas reiterated Lithuania’s strong commitment to continue to actively work with the European Union and international community in order to stabilize the situation in Kosovo.
