LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER AND NEW INDIAN AMBASSADOR TO LITHUANIA DISCUSS DEVELOPMENT OF BILATERAL RELATIONS AND LEGAL FRAMEWORK
At the meeting with the new Indian Ambassador to Lithuania Monika Kapil Mohta on 15 December, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė underlined that in recent years both countries aimed at a deeper bilateral dialogue addressing economic, political, cultural and scientific issues. The diplomats discussed results of the Lithuanian business forum and political consultations that were held in November in India and future prospects of bilateral relations.
Lithuanian business representatives are successfully searching for a niche in the huge market of India. Investors from this country are also becoming increasingly aware of business opportunities in Lithuania.M.Kapil Mohta once confirmed that she would make every effort to make the intergovernmental agreement on co-operation in the spheres of culture, science and education work and to have the agreement on co-operation in the fields of science and technology signed by Lithuania and India, as well as the programme of co-operation in the fields of culture, arts and sports.
In 2012, Lithuania and India will be marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė proposed to celebrate this anniversary by organizing high level visits and cultural events in both countries.
In the first half of 2011, the Lithuanian-Indian turnover amounted to 178.23 million Litas. Lithuania’s trade balance with India was positive and amounted to 66.03 million Litas. In the first half of the year 2011, Lithuania’s exports to India amounted to 122.13 million Litas and, compared with the same period in year 2010, decreased by 47.2 per cent.
The Indian Ambassador to Lithuania is residing in Warsaw.
Lithuania and India established diplomatic relations on 27 April 1992.
