LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER AND MOLDOVAN DEFENCE MINISTER DISCUSS BILATERAL COOPERATION

On 18 May at the meeting in Vilnius, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas and Moldovan Defence Minister Vitalie Marinuţa discussed bilateral defence cooperation, NATO and Partnership with the countries of Eastern Europe and Transdniestrian issue.

The meeting focused on current issues of Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Transdniestrian conflict settlement. Vice-Minister E.Meilūnas noted that the solution of protracted conflicts was among the objectives of Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the OSCE.

The Vice-Minister assured V.Marinuţa that Lithuania supported Moldova’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations and the ongoing reforms in the country, and was ready to share its experience of accession to NATO and the European Union with Moldova.

V.Marinuţa thanked Lithuania for its consistent support in the sphere of defence and military reforms, and a possibility for representatives from Moldova’s Armed Forces to study at the Military Academy of Lithuania.

E.Meilūnas and V.Marinuţa also discussed this year’s planned visits of Moldova’s high-level officials to Lithuania.

The Vice-Minister thanked Moldovan Defence Minister for support to the Lithuanian Embassy in Chisinau, which performed functions of NATO Contact Point Embassy in Moldova in 2009-2010.
