LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER AND MALTA’S AMBASSADOR DISCUSS LITHUANIAN EU COUNCIL PRESIDENCY AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION PROBLEMS

On 17 October, the Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Vytautas Leškevičius met with Malta’s new Ambassador to Lithuania Charles Mifsud, who is paying a visit to Vilnius, and discussed the agenda of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council, prospects for bilateral cooperation as well as illegal immigration problems.

The Foreign Vice-Minister acquainted Malta’s Ambassador with Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council and further tasks. V.Leškevičius underlined that the 3rd Eastern Partnership Summit on 28-29 November in Vilnius was one of the Presidency’s key events. It is expected that Malta will participate at the highest political level in the Summit.

At the meeting, the Foreign Vice-Minister drew attention to the recent tragedies in the Mediterranean. In less than two weeks a couple of vessels with refugees capsized in the high seas near the Italian island of Lampeduza and Malta. The Lithuanian diplomat stressed the importance of EU solidarity not only responding to these tragedies, but also dealing with other illegal immigration problems constantly facing the EU.

Malta’s Ambassador C.F.Mifsud presented his letters of credence to the President of the Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė on 16 October 2013. This is his first appointment as Ambassador.
