Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister and Ireland’s Ambassador discuss political and economic cooperation

On 9 February, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Albinas Zananavičius met with the Ambassador of Ireland to Lithuania David Noonan. In the meeting, the officials discussed issues related bilateral political and economic cooperation, the EU agenda, the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, and other relevant issues.

“Ireland and Lithuania are close partners within the EU that can boast of an overlap of various foreign policy issues. We hope to maintain consistent and purposeful cooperation between our two countries also in the future,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister.

As regards bilateral experience sharing, the interlocutors discussed the possibility of potential cooperation between Lithuania and Ireland in the field of agriculture.

Both interlocutors agreed that the negotiation on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU was important for maintaining a strong relationship between the EU and Britain, based on common values. According to Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister, we must ensure that the EU citizens living in Britain are not unfairly discriminated against. Both sides agreed that the future relationship with the UK had to be based on the balance between rights and obligations.

At the end of the meeting, Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister drew the Ambassador’s attention to a threat posed by the Belarusian nuclear power plant, which is currently under construction, to Lithuania and the entire region. The Irish Ambassador confirmed that Ireland was well aware of our country’s concerns and supported Lithuania in this matter.
