LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE EU MILITARY COMMITTEE DISCUSS ISSUES OF EU SECURITY AND DEFENCE
On March 16 in Vilnius, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and Håkan Syrén, the Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, discussed Lithuania’s preparation for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and political aspects of Lithuania’s participation in the EU missions and operations. The meeting also focused on the fight against maritime piracy, the EU crisis management procedures, the future of the European Security Strategy and EU-NATO cooperation issues.
Skaisgirytė Liauškienė stressed that since the adoption of the European Security Strategy in 2003, there have been many changes in the geopolitical context and institutional structure of the EU. Therefore, Lithuania speaks up for discussions on the strategy and forecasts of challenges for the future security environment.This is the first visit of Syrén to Lithuania since the chairman assumed office in 2009.
During his visit to Lithuania, he also had meetings with Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė and Chief of Defence Arvydas Pocius. Moreover, Syrén is to meet with members of the Committee on National Security and Defence of the Seimas and will pay a visit to Energy Security Centre in Vilnius.
