Lithuanian Foreign Ministry’s Statement on the detention of peaceful protesters in the Russian Federation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania expresses its deep concern over mass arrests of participants in anti-corruption protests in many cities across Russia yesterday, on 26 March. The founder of Anti-corruption Foundation, one of Russia’s opposition leaders Alexei Navalny and other employees of the Fund were among hundreds arrested in anti-corruption rallies.

We call on the Russian authorities to release all detainees immediately. We also call on the authorities of the Russian Federation to guarantee their citizens the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and to freedom of expression. These and other civil liberties and fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Russian Federation should be fully respected, guaranteed and cannot be restricted, as the Russian Federation has committed itself at the international level.
