LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY‘S STATEMENT ON PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN BELARUS
Lithuania expresses concern over the Belarusian Presidential election that passed in atmosphere of intimidation and where the freedom of press and equal conditions for all the candidates were not ensured. Such election can not be considered democratic and free.
International observers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) stated that the Belarusian presidential election failed to meet OSCE commitments for democratic elections; many serious violations of international election standards were made.
The statement of the observers of the Commonwealth of Independent States that the election conforms to Belarusian laws and therefore is legitimate is incomprehensible.
Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses support to the people of Belarus, who protect by peaceful means their chosen way of democratic development.
We invite international community to join the efforts to create an open and free Belarusian civic society.
Today this position was also presented by Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis at the European General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting.
