LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY’S POLITICAL DIRECTOR ATTENDS AN INFORMAL MEETING OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE EU MEMBER STATES

On 10-11 January in Ireland’s capital Dublin, Ambassador Dalius Čekuolis, the Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, took part in an informal meeting of political directors of Foreign Affairs Ministries of the EU member states. The meeting focused on the situation in Syria, relations between the EU and China, and the cooperation between the EU and the United States in Asia.

The meeting discussed the situation in Afghanistan, as the international forces are transferring full security responsibility to the local authorities, and the impact of this process on the situation in Central Asia. The discussion was attended by EU Special Representative for Central Asia Patricia Flor and EU Special Representative for Afghanistan Vygaudas Ušackas.

The meeting also discussed relevant issues related to the Western Balkans – the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and relations between Serbia and Kosovo.

Informal meetings of political directors are traditionally held in the country that holds the Presidency of the EU Council. Ireland took over the Presidency on 1 January this year and organised the informal discussion of key issues on the EU’s foreign policy agenda.
