LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY UNDERSECRETARY ENCOURAGED THE ACTIVE START OF THE UN REFORM IMPLEMENTATION
On 20 September Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Oskaras Jusys delivered a speech at the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Oskaras Jusys rejoiced that this organization, created sixty years ago and now having 191 members started a comprehensive reform in order to improve the organisation’s capacity to act adequately and effectively.
The Ministry Undersecretary encouraged the states to implement without delay the principal agreements they have reached, primarily on the Human Rights Council and the Peace Building Commission establishment. He also underlined that Lithuania particularly welcomes the idea of the Human Rights Council, which would ensure the primacy of the human rights in all areas of the UN activities.
“Lithuania welcomes the strong and unconditional condemnation of terrorism in the outcome document. We call on the 60th session of the General Assembly to complete the work on a comprehensive convention on terrorism and a global counter-terrorism strategy,” the Ministry Undersecretary said. He also supported the establishment of a Democracy fund, which activities would be valuable for countries seeking to strengthen their democratic practices and the rule of law.
Oskaras Jusys expressed disappointment at the failure to agree for the second time on non-proliferation and disarmament.
“We must honour our earlier agreements and obligations, we must restore consensus and invest all our efforts in search of agreement on this crucial issue,” Oskaras Jusys stated. He also reminded that the non-proliferation issue becomes highly important in global society’s fight against terrorism.
The Undersecretary also emphasised the importance of the Security Council reform. He confirmed Lithuania’s support for candidacies of Germany and Japan as permanent Security Council members.
