LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY UNDERSECRETARY AND GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER DISCUSS EU REFORMS

On 29 January, Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Rytis Martikonis, who is visiting the Federal Republic of Germany, met with German Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Fischer. During the meeting, the officials discussed the work of the European Convention and a reform of EU institutions. The position of Germany on the reform was presented. Undersecretary Martikonis stated his assurance that a balance between the principles of efficiency and transparency and positions of all interested states will be found when implementing the reform. The new EU policy towards its Eastern neighbours was also an issue at the meeting. The German Minister noted that after joining the EU Lithuania will face new tasks developing the relations with Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. During the three-day visit in Berlin, Rytis Martikonis participated in the conference EU Relations with its New Neighbours and in the discussion arranged by the German Foreign Ministry and devoted to EU enlargement and deepening processes. The Foreign Ministry Undersecretary also met with German Finance Ministry State Secretary for European Policy Caio K.Koch-Weser, German representatives in the Convention on the Future of the EU Juergen Meyer and Peter Altmaier. The meetings addressed the issues of integration and future of the EU.
