Lithuanian Foreign Ministry summons Russian Ambassador

On 28 February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania summoned the Ambassador of Russia to Lithuania Alexander Udaltsov. The Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Andrius Krivas expressed deep concerns about the situation in Crimea and requested him to explain Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

At the meeting, the Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister called on Russia to respect its international commitments and the laws of Ukraine that were in effect for all the territory of Ukraine and underlined the need to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity, political sovereignty and inviolability of borders, as established in the Helsinki Final Act of 1975 and the Budapest Memorandum of 1994. Lithuania also called on Russia to maintain a dialogue with the Ukrainian leadership.

The Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister strictly rejected Ambassador’s argument that current situation in Ukraine was only a bilateral issue between Ukraine and Russia. He also rejected the ungrounded criticism and charges in regard to actions of the European Union and Lithuania in Ukraine.

The Ambassador assured that he would inform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia about Lithuania’s position and that its reaction would be made public.
