Lithuanian Foreign Ministry hands a diplomatic note to Russia’s Ambassador over incidents in the exclusive economic zone of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea

On 12 October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania summoned the Ambassador of Russia to Lithuania Alexander Udaltsov who received a diplomatic note that expressed concerns over repeated violations by the Russian Navy of the rights and freedoms of the sovereign Republic of Lithuania and other states in the exclusive economic zone of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea.

On 10 October, the Russian warships demanded civilian ships in the exclusive economic zone of Lithuania to change course. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania calls on the Russian Federation to consistently comply with international legal norms, the principles of good neighbourliness and to ensure that similar incidents do not happen again in the future.

Lithuania’s concerns over the deployment of the Iskander-M nuclear-capable ballistic missile system in Kaliningrad and flights of Russian planes over the Baltic Sea were also repeatedly expressed to the Russian Ambassador. The fighters of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission were scrambled to identify and escort Russian planes, flying near NATO’s airspace 20 times just on 6-9 October.
