LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER WELCOMES THE DECISION TO ESTABLISH EUROPEAN INSTITUTE FOR GENDER EQUALITY IN LITHUANIA

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas welcomed one of the most important achievements of European integration – the decision of the EU Council of 1 December to establish European Institute for Gender Equality in Lithuania.

“The decision shows Lithuania’s progress in gender equality. It is obvious that many Lithuanian women took full advantage of their equal possibilities in the sphere of politics, business, culture and science and now are making Lithuania famous,” Foreign Minister Vaitiekūnas said.

The decision to establish this agency (the second EU agency established after the EU enlargement in 2004) in Vilnius means that Lithuania’s performance has been acknowledged. This will be the first collective EU agency to be founded in Lithuania.

The budget of the Institute for Gender Equality is € 52,7 million for 7 years.  The institute will collect and provide the Community and the EU Members with information about the situation on gender equality, will analyse and promote the best practices.
