Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis has welcomed the decision of Russia to remove import restrictions for animal products from the EU countries, including Lithuania.
According to the Minister, excellent relations of Lithuania’s veterinary service and the European Commission, coordinated activity of this service and the Lithuanian diplomats in Brussels as well as joint efforts with other EU countries led to a quick and effective resolving of this trade issue.
“This proves one more time that from now on we can use all existing EU trade instruments in our relations with Russia. Our trade interests in Russia are becoming the interests of the whole European Union,” Antanas Valionis said.
Last week, Lithuania and other neighbouring EU countries immediately informed the European Commission about the obstacles to their export of animal products to Russia.
Concern over these issues was expressed at the EU Permanent Representatives Committee on 3 June as well as on 4 June at the specialised agencies of the Council of the European Union.
The European Commission and the French negotiators started negotiations with Russia while staying in close contact with the other EU members.
On 5 June, it was decided that Russia would renew the trade in animal products with the EU countries, whereas the present veterinary certificates would be valid till 1 October this year.
Further negotiations with Russia concerning the order of import after 1 October will be initiated in the nearest future.
