LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER WELCOMES RESULTS OF HUNGARIAN EU REFERENDUM

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis welcomed the results of the Hungarian referendum of 12 April, showing that the Hungarians approved their country’s membership in the European Union. “Its success points out to a firm decision of the Hungarian people concerning the future of their country, and sets a good example to the candidate state that will hold a referendum after Hungary, i.e. to Lithuania. It successfully continued the series of referendums, sped up this process, and provided guidance to others,” the Foreign Minister said. According to him, the success of the Hungarian referendum is one more step towards the practical implementation of the EU expansion, whose goal is a united Europe. On the other hand, this success, according to Antanas Valionis, does not mean automatism of further expansion process of the European Union; Lithuania and the remaining candidate states should prepare very carefully for the future referendums on the membership in the organisations.
