On 9 December, the European Union (EU) foreign ministers approved the draft European Security Strategy, which should be adopted in the European Council on 12-13 December in Brussels.
In the opinion of Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis, the European Security Strategy indicates the beginning of a new stage in the EU consolidation. “The EU becomes not solely strong economic community, but political and security community as well. And this corresponds to our national interests,” Minister Valionis stated.
He also underlined that NATO and the transatlantic link remained the base for the European security.
“We are satisfied that the EU Security Strategy clearly states the key role of NATO in ensuring security. I also evaluate positively the idea that the EU will closely cooperate with NATO and will strive to maintain the transatlantic link,” the Minister pointed out.
