LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER: WE SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON INTERNAL PREPARATIONS FOR ACCESSION TO THE SCHENGEN AREA IN 2007

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas welcomes the decisions of the   EU Justice and Home Affairs Council opening Lithuania a possibility to join the Schengen area.

On 5 December in Brussels the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council accepted  Portugal’s proposal to extend the current Schengen Information System (SIS) to new Member States.

“Positive EU’s decisions has opened up a new opportunity, but the final goal – abolition of internal border controls between EU Members – will be reached only after timely completion of internal preparations. Therefore corresponding Lithuanian institutions should concentrate their efforts,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister underlined.

Close cooperation between Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs helped to ensure active presentation of Lithuania’s strivings in the EU Member States and united position of the new Members of the EU and made important contribution to their success.

“We hope that the united position on enlargement of the Schengen area taken by the new EU Members and positive EU’s decisions will encourage the EU to reach unanimous decisions on other important issues,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy stated.
