LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER: WE AIM AT BRINGING TOGETHER ENERGY AND FOREIGN POLICIES
On 16 May during the conference „A fresh look at the world map: Lithuania‘s energy security“ Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis stressed that Lithuania‘s energy security is one of today’s most important issues.
During the annual meeting of the heads of Lithuanian diplomatic missions Foreign Minister said that in Lithuania up till now energy issues were discussed mainly by specialists.
“Discussion on such an important issue as energy security should be public and open, involving not only specialists, but also politicians and the society,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy stated.
“International processes have bigger impact on our energy security than it is assumed. Success and failures of multilateral coalitions in the Near East and other “hot spots” of the world influence oil and gas prices and through this – our possibilities to adopt the Euro and competitiveness of the whole Lithuanian economy,” Minister Valionis said.
According to the Foreign Minister, if this connection was seen and understood more balanced decisions both in internal and foreign policy could be taken.
“Our aim is to bring together Lithuania’s energy and foreign policies. I am sure that the competence of Lithuanian economists and energy specialists, linked with the experience of our diplomats would produce much more significant effect. Our joint efforts are crucial for the future of both Lithuanian energy sector and state security,” Minister Valionis emphasised.
