LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER VISITS SINGAPORE

The Lithuanian delegation led by Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis, continuing the visit in the Southeastern Asia, on 8 April in Singapore met the country’s Foreign Minister S Jayakumar and extended him an invitation to come to Lithuania on an official visit. The Lithuanian Minister also met Chairman of Singapore-European Parliamentary Group Leong Horn Kee and welcomed the Lithuanian and Singapore businessmen at the opening of the bilateral business forum. Antanas Valionis invited the Singapore businessmen to visit Lithuania together with Foreign Minister S Jayakumar. During the meetings, it was agreed to develop political, cultural, educational and economic cooperation both on the bilateral level and on the basis of the European Union (EU) – Singapore relations, as Singapore is an active supporter of the Asian dialogue with the EU. Minister Valionis acquainted Singapore’s officials with Lithuania’s striving to become a member of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and participate in the Summit of this Organisation to take place in October 2004 in Hanoi. A special attention during Minister Valionis’ meetings in Singapore was devoted to economy. The spheres of trade, investment, tourism, science and technologies, IT and biotechnologies were pointed out as extremely promising. It was agreed to continue working towards concluding bilateral economic agreements. Singapore is the last state in the agenda of the Lithuanian Foreign Minister’s official visit in the Southeastern Asia. Minister Valionis leaves to Lithuania on 9 April.
