LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER VISITED MOLDOVA
On 9 September in Chisinau Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas together with Moldavian Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Stratan opened an international seminar “Moldova and Europe’s East”.
Addressing the participants of the seminar Lithuanian Foreign Minister underlined that not only EU’s strategic interests in the Eastern Europe – stability, security, and cooperation built on shared values – are important. It is important that the interests of Moldova and other Eastern neighbours were the same.
“Moldova, like other countries that have chosen the stony road of difficult but inevitable reforms, deserves political support, assistance, and greater involvement from the EU side,” Minister Vaitiekūnas said.
“Moldova can be the “test-case”, which will prove that closer partnerships with our neighbours in Europe will strengthen European stability and security in the long run,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy stated.
During the international seminar organized by Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Moldavian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Moldova’s economic development, Euro-Atlantic integration, conflict resolution and regional cooperation issues were considered.
On 9 September Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas also discussed with Moldavian Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev, Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Stratan, Vice-Chairman of Moldavian Parliament Iurie Rosca and Minister of Economics and Trade Valeriu Lazar important issues of Lithuanian-Moldavian bilateral relations.
The participants of the meetings exchanged opinions on internal situation in Moldova, Moldova’s relations with the European Union and NATO, Transdnistrian issue, problems of the World Trade Organization.
Moldavian officials thanked Lithuanian Foreign Minister for Lithuania’s support for Moldova’s integration aspirations, transferred integration experience and participation of Lithuanian officers in the EU border mission in Moldova.
Foreign Minister Vaitiekūnas noted that Lithuania will continue to support Moldova’s European integration aspirations and encouraged to continue coherent reforms.
Moldavian Prime Minister Tarlev extended an invitation to Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas to visit Moldova.
In his turn the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy invited Moldavian Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Stratan to come on an official visit to Lithuania.
