LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER VISITED BRUSSELS

On December 14, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis continuing his visit in Brussels met US Permanent Representative at NATO Nicholas Burns and Assistant of NATO Secretary General Günther Altenburg. The Lithuanian Foreign Minister and the US Representative discussed the results of the NATO Foreign Ministers and EAPC meetings, NATO and Russian Permanent General Council session, which were held in Brussels on December 6-7 and the Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian and US Partnership Commission meeting, which was held in Washington D.C on December 10. Minister Valionis presented also the program of Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and the beginning of its implementation. He also informed the US Representative about his visits in Moldova, Ukraine and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The officials discussed the issues of NATO enlargement, fighting terrorism and the relations between NATO and Russia. At the meeting with NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Günther Altenburg Foreign Minister Valionis discussed the upcoming visit of NATO officials to Lithuania in March, 2002 and the relations with Russia. On December 15, Minister Valionis participated in the European Union Summit meeting at Laeken as a member of the Lithuanian delegation headed by President Valdas Adamkus.
