LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER: TODAY EUROPE NEEDS AMBITIOUS EUROPEAN ENERGY POLICY
On 10 January European Commission put forward an integrated set of proposals to tackle climate change, create EU internal energy market and strengthen external energy policy.
Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas marked that the cut off of oil supply caused by Russia and Belarus conflict, that had direct influence on five Members of the European Union including Germany currently presiding over the EU, increases the importance of a single European Energy Policy.
“The European Commission’s proposals on strategic review of energy policy are of special importance. I believe that they will help the Spring European Council to agree on effective actions for creating common energy policy and strengthening Europe’s energy security,” Foreign Minister Vaitiekūnas said.
The Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy underlined that it is important to make thorough evaluation of Commission’s proposals and offer Lithuania’s suggestions on this issue.
The Commission proposed a plan of priority links where the electricity bridge between Lithuania and Poland was named among the four key infrastructure projects. Proposals on the future of nuclear energy are also important for reduction of global warming and for stressing significance of nuclear energy.
“Today Europe needs ambitious European energy policy. We should increase energy security by integrating the isolated markets, strengthening the EU positions in talks with external energy suppliers, defining alternative sources and implementing solidarity of the EU in case of energy supply crisis,” Foreign Minister underlined.
