LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TO STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF FAIR ALLOCATION OF EU FUNDS

During the General Affairs and External Relations Council (Gaerc) in Brussels Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis to stress the fair allocation of EU funds.

On 22 May, during the informal foreign ministers meeting on the eve of the Gaerc third renewed package of proposals for EU financial perspective for 2007-2013 was discussed. This package was prepared by Luxembourg currently presiding over the EU.

A. Valionis took a favourable view of Luxembourg’s proposal, because the renewed proposal actually takes into consideration Lithuania’s position on using the individual forecasts of economic growth for each Member State when calculating financial assistance.

Lithuania’s growth is greater than EU average, so the amount of EU funding should grow accordingly. Luxembourg also offers using the newest GDP statistics of 2005 for calculating the funding. This will also have positive influence on the amount of financial assistance to reach Lithuania in 2007-2013.
