Lithuanian Foreign Minister to attend the European Union-League of Arab States Foreign Affairs Ministerial Meeting in Athens

On 10–11 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius is taking part in the European Union-League of Arab States Foreign Affairs Ministerial Meeting in Athens, the capital city of Greece. The visit is aimed to strengthen relations with leaders of the League of Arab States and to ensure better protection of Lithuania’s interests in the region.

In Athens, the Foreign Ministers will discuss cooperation between the EU and the League of Arab States, the situations in Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Yemen, Sahel and Sudan, the Middle East peace process, the nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East and other issues on the international agenda. The Foreign Ministers will adopt a joint declaration.

The meeting is organised by the current Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This is the 3rd European Union-League of Arab States Foreign Affairs Ministerial Meeting. In 2008, the Foreign Ministers met in Malta. The second meeting was held in 2012 in Egypt.

In the margins of the event, L.Linkevičius will hold bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Jordan, Qatar, Yemen, Tunisia, Djibouti and Comoros to discuss cooperation in the United Nations, multilateral and bilateral issues.
