LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER - THE HONORARY PRESIDENT OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC COUNCIL
On 17 September Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis assumes the post of the Honorary President (Président d'Honneur) of the North Atlantic Council.
The Honorary President of the North Atlantic Council discharges responsibilities of the Dean of NATO Foreign Ministers. He chairs the meetings of the Council at the level of foreign ministers when neither the NATO Secretary General nor the Deputy NATO Secretary General can perform the duty.
The privilege of the Honorary President is to organize an annual working dinner for NATO Allies and partners in Brussels where topicalities of the Alliance are usually discussed and deliver the address opening the dinner.
When the Ally’s Government agrees to take over the post from the preceding country, its foreign minister is appointed Honorary President for one year.
