LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER: THE EUROPEAN ENDOWMENT FOR DEMOCRACY TO PROMOTE EUROPEAN VALUES IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

On 27 May in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius attended the opening ceremony of the headquarters for the European Endowment for Democracy and assessed this initiative to promote the European values of freedom and democracy as an ambitious and realistic one. “We hope that the European Endowment for Democracy will help us meet wants of the ones with high support needs. The Endowment comes at a very timely moment and is consistent with Lithuania’s approach to the demands of the European Neighbourhood Policy and, especially, of the Eastern Neighbourhood. Openness to our Eastern partners is one of the priorities for Lithuania’s incoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union,” Linkevičius said.

The Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski opened the headquarters for the European Endowment for Democracy at the former Polish Embassy in Belgium. The head of the Lithuanian diplomacy noted that the Endowment was set up thanks to a joint effort of the EU member states, first of all, thanks to the Polish EU Presidency in 2011, and to European Union institutions.

The European Endowment for Democracy is an independent private law foundation with its seat in Brussels. It is financed by the EU’s member states and dedicated to developing Europe’s democracy-building initiatives in the EU’s eastern and southern neighbourhoods.
