LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER THANKS RUSSIAN POLITICAL AND PUBLIC FIGURES FOR THE PROMOTION OF BILATERAL RELATIONS
On 29 July in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis met with Russian political and public figures Fyodor Shelov-Kovedyaev and Yuri Afanasiev and expressed gratitude for their personal contribution to the formation of the Lithuanian-Russian relations and long-term support for Lithuania’s independence.
At the invitation of the Lithuanian Seimas and Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Russian politician, historian, political scientist Fyodor Shelov-Kovedyaev and historian Yuri Afanasiev are participating in a roundtable discussion “The Treaty on Inter-State Relations between Lithuania and Russia: its Significance in 1991 and Today“. The discussion takes place in the Seimas and is dedicated to 20th anniversary of the Lithuanian-Russian agreement on the foundations of inter-state relations.The Minister noted that this fundamental document signed twenty years ago by the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Lithuania Vytautas Landsbergis and Russian President Boris Yeltsin defined further bilateral relations, opened the way for international recognition of statehood of the countries and became the basis for consolidation of sovereignty of the new democracies.
A.Ažubalis stated that as a direct witness to this historic event values the agreement as a document that gave rise to the formation of qualitatively new relations between Lithuania and Russia.
The Minister also shared with Fyodor Shelov-Kovedyaev and Yuri Afanasiev thoughts about the possibilities of strengthening cooperation and dialogue between Lithuanian and Russian societies.
