LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TAKES PART IN THE GAERC MEETING
On 2-3 October Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis takes part in the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting in Luxembourg.
EU foregn ministers will consider the start of negotiations with Turkey and Croatia and decide whether the negotiations should be started. If favourable decision is taken the accession talks will start on 3 October.
During the GAERC external relations session the discussions and preparations for EU-Russia Summit on 4 October in London are planned. Currently the talks on EU-Russia agreements on readmission and facilitation of visa regime are taking place. The Head of Lithuanian diplomacy Antanas Valionis talking with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed the country’s position that it is expedient to leave the facilitated visa regime for the residents of the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation travelling to Lithuania and for Lithuanian citizens travelling to the Kaliningrad region.
In the external relations session the relations with Uzbekistan and Iran, situation in the Near East and the Western Balkans will also be discussed.
