LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER STRESSES CLOSE ECONOMIC COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND SWEDEN

On 14 October at the meeting with the new Swedish Ambassador to Lithuania Cecilia Ruthström-Ruin, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis stressed close economic cooperation between Lithuania and Sweden.

Having been on the top for a long time, now Sweden is second largest investor in Lithuania. According to the Minister, its capital helped Lithuania to control the economic crisis.

A.Ažubalis hoped to receive Sweden’s support for ensuring adequate financing for the decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in the EU’s new financial perspective.

The meeting also discussed the coordination of the cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic countries (Nordic Baltic Eight, NB8). Next year Lithuania will take over the NB8 coordinator’s role.

The Minister congratulated the Ambassador on assuming office and wished success in strengthening the Lithuanian-Swedish bilateral relations and in developing the dialogue of the countries at the regional and international levels.

A.Ažubalis gave the Ambassador the book in English “Day of Triumph for Sigismund Vasa”.

C.Ruthström-Ruin came to Vilnius from Vienna, where she worked as head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The Ambassador presented credentials to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė on 6 September.
