LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SIGNED INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ON THE SUPPRESSION OF ACTS OF NUCLEAR TERRORISM
On 16 September the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Antanas Valionis taking part in the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly signed the International Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.
This Convention aims to strengthen the international legal framework to combat terrorism, defines the acts of nuclear terrorism, regulates the protection of nuclear material connected with terrorist attacks, provides a legal basis for measures of international cooperation in preventing terrorist attacks.
At the moment 63 states have informed the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan of their intention to sign the Convention during the 2005 World Summit.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister also met with his Armenian counterpart Vartan Oskanian. The ministers discussed political and economical situation in Armenia, its relations with the European Union, implementation of the European Neighbourhood Policy, perspectives of regional cooperation, Armenian Foreign Minister’s upcoming visit to Vilnius and possibilities of strengthening bilateral cooperation.
