According to the Foreign Minister of Lithuania Antanas Valionis, Europe seeking to overcome such big challenges like threat of terrorism has to remain as a safe, stable and flourishing place. “Meanwhile the continuous processes of the enlargement of the European Union (EU) and NATO contribute to an increase in security and stability on our continent”, said the Head of Lithuanian diplomacy on the Meeting of the European Conference devoted to the fight against terrorism on October 20, in Brussels.
Minister Valionis also said it would be very useful for the EU to communicate and co-operate with its partners – the states of the Central and Eastern Europe - in reaching common attitude and the integrity of the continent’s security. “The effective co-ordination of the activities of present and future EU members can only ensure the efficient implementation of the actions that will prevent both terrorism financing and money laundering as well as stimulate anti-terrorist reconnaissance and more strict control of the movement of goods that could be used for terrorist actions”, Foreign Minister notified.
Minister Valionis also reminded of the fact that Lithuania fully condemned the terrorist attacks in the United States and declared its solidarity and support for the U.S. Lithuania emphasised its determination to fight terrorism along with the international community and NATO and acceded to the conclusions of the European Council’s Extraordinary Meeting and to the Membership Action Plan in which the measures of combating terrorism were foreseen. At the Meeting Minister informed the participants of the measures that had been taken by Lithuania to fight terrorism.
The delegations from Russia, the Ukraine and Moldova also participated in the Meeting of the European Conference in Brussels devoted to the development of a political dialogue between the members of the European Union and the candidate states. According to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Valionis, it was extremely important to involve the countries of this region in forming the world’s anti-terrorist coalition as well as to develop an intensive dialogue between the EU and NATO.
