LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MET WITH HIS COUNTERPARTS FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION, UKRAINE, GEORGIA, AZERBAIJAN AND EGYPT IN NEW YORK

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis in the framework of the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly took part in a joint meeting of the European Union’s Foreign Ministers and also met with Ukrainian, Egyptian, Azerbaijani and Georgian foreign ministers, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister.

During the meeting of the European Union’s Foreign Ministers the issues of Iran, Iraq and a peaceful settlement in the Near East were discussed. The ministers exchanged opinions on the United Nations reforms implementation measures adopted during the World Summit on 14-16 September.

In the meeting with Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Borys Tarasyuk the formation of new Ukrainian Government and Lithuanian-Ukrainian bilateral cooperation were considered.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Salome Zourabishvili acquainted Antanas Valionis with the details of the EU-Georgia Action Plan. The trends of cooperation of three Baltic States and three Caucasian states were also talked over in the meeting.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister talked with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar Mamadyarov about the preparations for upcoming parliament elections in Azerbaijan, economic development and regional cooperation.

In the meeting with the Foreign Minister of Egypt Ahmed Aboul Gheit tourism, trade and investment issues as well as the details of the forthcoming Egyptian Foreign Minister’s visit to Lithuania were discussed.

Tourism, trade, investment promotion and bilateral representation enhancement were also considered with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Winston Baldwin Spencer.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Surakhiart Sathirathai presented his candidacy to the post of the United Nations Secretary General to Lithuanian Foreign Minister. The second term of current UN Secretary General Kofi Annan ends in December 2006.
