LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH UKRAINE’S LEADERS TO DISCUSS KEY ISSUES OF BILATERAL COOPERATION
On 7 February in Kyiv, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis held meetings with President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovich, country’s Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, and discussed with them issues of bilateral cooperation, economic relations and the project of the container train “Viking”.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister assured Minister A.Ažubalis that he would aim to have customs procedures simplified for the “Viking” train and to establish common customs posts, which would facilitate and accelerate cargo carriage.Minister A.Ažubalis drew the attention of M.Azarov to impediments for the Lithuanian business in Ukraine: recently Ukrainian customs procedures became more complex, which caused Lithuanian exporters’ losses, difficulties also arise for Lithuanian construction companies in Ukraine.
At the meeting, head of the Lithuanian diplomacy also raised the issue of inquiry into Ukraine’s initiated protective measures against import of petroleum products and stressed that when taking any decisions Ukraine had to comply with its obligations under the World Trade Organization agreements.
During the visit to Kyiv, Minister A.Ažubalis and Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn discussed the issues of human rights, democracy and humanitarian cooperation.
On 8 February, Minister A.Ažubalis, as the Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), is paying a visit to Moldova.
