LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS HIS GEORGIAN COUNTERPART AND OSCE REPRESENTATIVE

On 12 September, during an official visit with Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas in Georgia, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis met with Head of Tbilisi Mission of the Organisation of Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Roy Stephen Reeve and Georgian Foreign Minister Irakli Menagarishvili. The Head of the Mission paid a lot of attention to the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia to be monitored by OSCE observers. Minister Valionis was briefed on the problem of Georgian territorial integrity and the economic situation in the country. During the meeting, officials exchanged opinions on regional cooperation among the three Caucasian states and their ties with Russia and Turkey. At Minister Valionis’ meeting with the Georgian Foreign Minister, opinions were exchanged on the enlargement of the European Union and NATO. Minister Irakli Menagarishvili was interested in Valionis’ view on the future of Europe. The ministers discussed the “wider Europe” initiative and involvement of the states of the Southern Caucasus in it. Lithuanian Foreign Minister introduced the experience of the Baltic regional co-operation and co-operation of Baltic and Scandinavian countries to his colleague. The discussion also touched upon closer ties between the Baltic and Southern Caucasus regions.
