LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER INVITES CHINA’S TELECOMMUNICATIONS GIANT TO INTENSIFY COOPERATION WITH LITHUANIA

On 26 May in Beijing, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis, who is paying a working visit to China, met with Senior Vice President of Huawei Technologies Zhang Chunxiang and invited him to implement new and larger projects in Lithuania. The Minister welcomed the fruitful cooperation between Lithuania and the Chinese telecommunications company. This is the first success of Lithuanian diplomats in attracting investments from China.

“I am pleased that Huawei Technologies has evaluated Lithuania’s achievements in the sphere of information and communication technologies and has chosen our country as test and implementation platform for technological innovation. Competence Centre for Information Technology in Vilnius, or in another Lithuanian city, could be another project of yours,” A.Ažubalis said at the meeting.

The biggest telecommunication equipment maker by sales Huawei Technologies is a Chinese company that invests overseas the most. On the eve of the Minister’s visit, Huawei Technologies, Omnitel and Vilnius University, signed an agreement on the establishment of joint science laboratory in the Baltic region.

The company has already established its representative office in Lithuania, which provides services to the majority of Lithuanian mobile phone operators. This Chinese company is also cooperating with Vilnius University and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. In July, the company plans to send some students from those universities to the Huawei Technologies Corporate Campus in China. The company also examines ways and means to open a research and development centre in Lithuania.

This is the second meeting of an official of the state of Lithuania with the leadership of Huawei Technologies. In October 2010 in Shanghai, President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė met with leaders of this company during her visit to China.
