LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER HOPES THAT THE STATEMENT OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT WILL HELP OBJECTIVE EVALUATION OF LITHUANIA‘S POSSIBILITIES TO JOIN THE EURO ZONE

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis welcomed the statement of the European Parliament urging the European Commission to update its convergence report on Lithuania’s readiness to introduce the Euro.

In his statement adopted on 1 June the European Parliament calls on the European Commission to update its 2006 convergence report on Lithuania taking onto consideration the up-to-date inflation data.

“The decision of the European Parliament is a step forward in objective evaluation of Lithuania’s possibilities to join the Euro zone,” Minister Valionis marked.

According to the Minister, during the June European Council the European Commission should update its analysis with not only technical but also economically based arguments.
