LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER HOLDS TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH HIS RUSSIAN COUNTERPART

On 19 February Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis talked to Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov at the latter’s initiative. Over the conversation Ministers discussed the decision by GAZPROM to stop supplying gas to Belarus. The Lithuanian Minister expressed his concern over the negative consequences of this decision to Lithuania and Russia’s Region of Kaliningrad. The supply of gas had to be limited to certain enterprises in Lithuania due to the shortage. Igor Ivanov assured that he understood Lithuania’s concern and stressed that Russia would renew supplying gas to Lithuania in the nearest future. The Ministers also exchanged opinions concerning relations between the European Union (EU) and Russia, the prospects of developing the Kaliningrad Region within the context of EU enlargement and issues related to extension of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement to the EU’s new member states.
