LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER EXPRESSED HIS CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING AWAY OF NELSON MANDELA, ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE PERSONALITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
On 6 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius sent a letter to the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa Maite Nkoana-Mashabane expressing his deepest condolences on the passing away of President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a key political leader, South Africa’s first black president, renowned anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
In his letter, the head of the Lithuanian diplomacy highlights that N.Mandela’s firm stance on freedom and equality of his people significantly contributed to the development and democracy of many nations in the African continent as well as outside.
“On this sad moment of loss my sympathy is with the people of South Africa and the family of President Nelson Mandela,” reads the letter.
L.Linkevičius also reminds that being a small nation under the occupation of an oppressive power for half a century Lithuania felt a deep sympathy to the liberation movement led by Nelson Mandela.
