LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER DISCUSSED THE ISSUES OF INTERNATIONAL SECURITY AND ENERGY IN TALLINN

On 6 February Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas took part in  the Baltic-Adriatic-Atlantic Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ministers of Defence in Tallinn and discussed energy issues with Estonian officials.

“Final political decision at the governmental level of four participating states on implementation of the new nuclear power plant project is necessary,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy stressed at the meetings with Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet, Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Edgar Savisaar, Chief Executive Officer of “Eesti Energia” Sandor Liive.

Estonian Foreign Minister Mr  Paet underlined political importance of the new nuclear power plant and electricity bridges to the Baltic region.

At the Baltic-Adriatic-Atlantic Meeting Minister Vaitiekūnas emphasised that NATO operation in Afghanistan is the main priority of Lithuania’s participation in international operations.

The Minister also thanked the states, contributing to activities of Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Ghor province of Afghanistan.

At the meeting the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ministers of Defence paid special attention to regional security and international operations issues, NATO partnership policy and enlargement of the Alliance.

In Tallinn Foreign Minister Vaitiekūnas also met with his Albanian and Croatian counterparts.

Forthcoming visit of Albanian President to Lithuania was discussed with Albanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Besnik Mustafaj; opinions on possibilities for strengthening bilateral cooperation were exchanged. 

Lithuanian Foreign Minister and Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovič talked about international security issues and possibility for increasing Croatia’s contribution to the activities of Lithuanian-led PRT in Ghor province of Afghanistan.

This has been the second meeting of representatives of the states of the Baltic and Adriatic Charters. The first meeting took place in April 2006 in Brijuni, Croatia.
